I think we are beating a dead horse here when it comes to this "legitimate" vs "illegitimate" games discussion. We've all said that
no one wants to lose any games, that Beaumont vs WRR seems to be less of an issue now, and that more and more heavy events meets are being attached to
non-Highland festivals, which frankly I think is needed to keep the sport itself alive. Concerning the Fredericton marks, they threw a full games but when the
database crashed some of the meets haven't been entered yet and Fredericton is one of them. I believe they're still trying to find the scoresheets ..
but hey we all remember our PRs
Ok some other points so far .....
Pressure vs non pressure games: I think it's easier to throw farther at a games like Pugwash than it is in Antigonish for the simple fact that
you're more relaxed. Antigonish is the largest games on the east coast and it draws huge crowds. But as far as the National rankings go, I think an athlete
should be able to throw as well under pressure because let's face it, the Canadian Championships is a high pressure event. I myself get tense under
pressure (ie Victoria this year). Sean will tell you I was very nervous. This leads into the PR versus average scenario ...
The 5 game rule: We need 5 games to qualify for a National spot. Gord made a comment that he only had 4 games and was considering hosting an ASAA games
to get his 5th. I think this is a slippery slope. Believe me I know how hard it is to try and make all the games with work and a wife and child but if
you're serious about making move for that spot then you should make it to 5 games. I'm sure my wife and daughter would have liked it better that I use
my vacation time on them but they know it's important to me. We can't start making games to fill numbers because what's next? I don't like my
throws this year so I'll start another OSHA sanctioned games to better them? This also leads into the PR versus average scenario ...
PR system versus Average system: This I think is the only thing we should be discussing. Which is a touchy one I'll agree. No one is suggesting, I
don't think, that we can't include our PR's in the database to show people because they were hard earned but should they be used to give out spots
at Nationals anymore? Sometimes big throws can happen when someone has "peaked" at the right time, or they feel relaxed and are having fun, or they
simply catch a good one at that time. We've all been there. But we aren't in track and field with only 1-2 meets to peak at, some of us throw 10-12
comps in a season or even more like Greg so wouldn't consistency over an entire season be more accurate? It's very hard to peak in this situation I
think and stay strong and healthy at the same time. Using Al MacFarlane again as an example, he threw consistently far all season and it's great and he
should be rewarded for it. I'm not trying to take anything away from anyone who had a PR day(s) this summer but should having one stellar games be good
enough to get you a spot at the Canadian Championships over someone who threw consistent all season at 12 games? Or 20 games? What if someone had a rough
season but runs one more sanctioned games and throws PR's all day and snags a spot in the top 10? Do I then have another OSHA sanctioned games out east to
try and get in? This is where the discussion should take place and not with who's games is more legit than the other. At the WRR this year we threw the
same weights that the World Team Event used so....... I think we need to tighten up the rankings, go with an average system and reward consistency.. I'm
not trying to start any pissing matches or cause any bad feelings either, our community is a close and small one but if we're going to discuss this stuff
let's put it all out there.
